Microchip Boosts Indian R&D Investment

written by K.C. Krishnadas, courtesy of EE Times
BANGALORE, India — Microchip Technology Inc. plans to expand its R&D center here with an additional investment of $65 million.

Microchip also said the center will begin focusing on product definition.

The center is now staffed by 180 engineers. The new investment will be used to hire another 300 staffers to work on expanded R&D efforts across Microchip's product lines.

"This is the single largest R&D investment we are making outside of our Chandler (Ariz.) headquarters," Ganesh Moorthy, Microchip's executive vice president, said in a statement.

The Indian center currently develops 8-, 16- and 32-bit microcontrollers and digital signal controllers.

Microchip has about 500 customers in India, many of whom outsource designs to domestic designers. It has partnerships with about 45 Indian design houses, which it uses for silicon validation, wireless standards and protocol stacks for automotive applications.
